Course Summary

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and disabling condition characterized by low mood, fatigue, impaired concentration, and sleep disturbances, impacting the quality of life and functional ability of millions globally. Its etiology is multifactorial, involving neurocircuitry, genetic, and environmental influences, while diagnosis relies on core symptoms, validated screening tools such as the PHQ-9, and DSM-5 criteria. Evidence-based management emphasizes a collaborative care model integrating psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and pharmacologic treatment, with a tailored approach to patient preferences and symptoms. Initial therapy for mild MDD typically favors CBT, whereas moderate to severe cases may require combined or augmented strategies using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), bupropion, and other agents. Guideline-directed monitoring, suicide risk assessment, and long-term management are essential, with ongoing evaluation to address remission, relapse, or recurrence.

Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors for major depressive disorder (MDD)

Describe the diagnostic criteria and clinical manifestations of MDD

Recall nonpharmacologic treatment strategies for MDD
