New California Pharmacist Continuing Education Requirements Starting in 2024
Cultural Competency Requirement
According to Business and Professions Code (BPC) sections 4202 and 4231, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and advanced practice pharmacists renewing their licenses after January 1, 2024, must complete at least one hour of continuing education (CE) on cultural competency. The Board will not provide or endorse specific courses.
Licensees can select any course that meets the following criteria:
- The course focuses on patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender-nonconforming, queer, or questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
- The course is approved by an accreditation agency recognized by the board.
- The course addresses health disparities faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color.
- The course includes elements demonstrating how sexual identity is impacted by intersectionality.

Special Requirements for Advanced Practice Pharmacists
To renew your Advanced Practice Pharmacist license in California, you must complete 10 hours of ce courses each renewal cycle under Business and Professions Code section 4233. This is in addition to the 30 hours of CE courses required for a pharmacist license renewal pursuant to Business and Professions Code section 4231 The 10 hours of CE required for your advanced practice pharmacist license shall be in a subject matter in one or more areas of practice relevant to the pharmacist’s clinical or pharmacy practice.
Special Exemptions for New California Pharmacist Licenses
Pharmacists:
All new pharmacist licensees are exempt from completing continuing education (CE) during their first renewal period. CE requirements must be met by the end of their second renewal period.
Advanced Practice Pharmacists:
Similarly, new advanced practice pharmacist licensees are exempt from completing CE during their first renewal period. CE requirements must be met by the end of their second renewal period.
After the first renewal period, the CE schedule for a licensee’s pharmacist renewal and advanced practice pharmacist renewal will align.
