Course Summary

Pharmaceutical compounding is considered an art and science and involves preparing medications unique to the specific medication needs of each individual. Compounded nonsterile preparations include many different oral dosage forms, such as capsules, tablets, suspensions, solutions, and lozenges. These dosage forms play essential roles in the pharmaceutical care of patients, including concealing or masking the poor or bitter tastes of APIs, keeping APIs stable, and protecting APIs from deterioration. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who compound oral dosage forms should be well-versed in compounding standards as well as techniques to prepare medications that are effective, safe, and of high quality. This continuing education program will review the importance of oral dosage forms, discuss USP Chapter 795 standards pertaining to these dosage forms, and review techniques related to the preparation of capsules, tablets, solutions, suspensions, and lozenges.
