Course Summary
Within the realm of male health conditions, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a disorder with major public health consequences. Patients with BPH require a patient-centered, holistic approach to care that involves improving symptoms and quality of life, preventing disease progression, and minimizing medication side effects. All healthcare providers can play an important role in identifying patients requiring BPH treatment, recommending referrals, and helping the care team with BPH medication management. Further, pharmacists can provide crucial counseling on the appropriate use of BPH medications and help patients to mitigate side effects and avoid harmful drug interactions. This course will review the etiology and pathophysiology of BPH and describe available treatment options in detail, including appropriate administration, mechanisms of action, side effects, and contraindications. The role of the pharmacist in caring for patients with BPH will be discussed.
